Computer Instructions/Overview

How to work the lessons in Academic Sysems Login Academic Systems: Each lesson consists of six modules designed to provide you with instruction and practice, and to assess your progress. These six modules are Overview, Explain, Apply, Explore, Homework, and Evaluate.

overview Overview: You may look at the overview if you desire, it is not required. Overview gives you a preview of the lesson objectives and frequently provides a pretest.  If you score 95% on the pretest, you may use the pretest score in place of the evaluate.
explain Explain: You are expected to begin each lesson with the Explain module. Explain presents the mathematics and lets you try problems as you learn.  This is the place the learning of a concept takes place. After completing this module, go on and work the Apply module.
apply Apply: The way to learn mathematics is by working lots of problems. You can do this in Apply and get instant feedback.  When you need help, you can "link" directly to those pages in Explain that teach the concepts or procedures you are practicing.
explore Explore: For lessons where it is available, work the Explore modules. Explore lets you investigate the mathematics concepts, often by using tools or gathering data. Explore is where you find challenges to extend what you have learned in Explain.
evaluate Evaluate: If you are satisfied you know the material well enough, then it is time to take the Evaluate on the computer. Complete the Evaluate in your PAN first so you will have a good idea what will be on the Evaluate on-line. You may take each Evaluate a maximum of three times and the highest score will be used.
homework
Homework: Disregard the homework listed within Academic Systems software.  When you have completed these modules for a lesson, work the homework problems listed on the website and check your answers to the odd problems in the back of the PAN. Always check the homework link on the website to see which problems you are to turn in at the time you take your exams.

Computer difficulties: If you have computer or internet service provider problems which prevent you from participating, you are responsible for informing me by telephone immediately and you will be expected to find alternate computers to use (such as  in the Instructional Computing Center (Building 30) on campus) until your computer problems are fixed, so you will be able to finish the course on time. If you need or want to use these computers, stop at the helpdesk on the main floor and a technician will show you which computers to use and how to log on. You are expected to keep in contact with me, using e-mail and should you have computer or internet service provider problems which prevent you from receiving and sending e-mail you are responsible for informing me by telephone immediately.

Computer Problems Helpline: If you are having problems with your computer and Academic Systems, first print the screen or write down the error message in full. Check to make sure you are still connected to the Internet, as many errors occur because you have been disconnected. Reconnect before exiting any section of a lesson. Academic Systems does not save data until you finish a lesson and exit. Then, check the technical support WWW pages for the course. If problems persist, call the helpline at 206-592-4357 or e-mail them at ichelp@highline.edu.
